Place: Straights of Mackinac  |  City: Saint Ignace, United States

The Straits of Mackinac Underwater Preserve lies at the northern tip of Lakes Michigan and Huron. The five mile long Mackinac Bridge links Michigan's two peninsulas and marks the dividing point of the two lakes.

The Straits has a well-deserved reputation as a dangerous area to navigate. The region is populated with rocky shoals and shallows that place ships in peril. Perhaps even worse are the storms that can enter the narrow Straits and quickly magnify wind and waves. Over the years large numbers of ships have foundered in the Straits. Many have yet to be discovered.

St. Ignace, on the northern side of the straits (where we will be staying), offers plenty of accommodations and restaurants.  The Mackinac Bridge, which crosses the straits within sight of popular Mackinac Island, is a top attraction in itself.

Great Dive Shop!

Great Dive Shop, the instructor went out of his way to explain things and he was super patient. My husband has been trying to get me Scuba certified for years and I kept putting it off, but now that I am certified, I really wish I had done it sooner. The process was a lot easier than i thought it would be, and the teacher walked us through everything in a way that was really easy to understand. after I got my certification, my husband and I decided to sign up our two kids (14, 17) and now our whole family is certified.  I would say this place is family friendly and a great place to take classes and buy equipment.
